6.4 After an accident

If you sustain an injury or experience an incident during working hours or while travelling to and from work, it is essential to report it. Students should report to their course coordinator, while guests and employees should report to their line manager.

Reporting incidents and occupational injuries can apply to various aspects of your work environment including physical, organizational and social factors.

  • An incident is an undesired event or situation that could have resulted in a work-related health issues, illnesses or accidents.
  • Injuries can occur due to accidents, occupational illnesses, psychologically stressful working conditions, repetitive strain or overload injury, hearing impairments from noise exposure, or exposure to hazardous substances.

More detailed information can be found on the Lund university HR staff pages: Incidents and occupational injuries

If you are unsure about what to report, seek advice from your course coordinator, line manager, safety representative or EHS coordinator.

Reporting occupational injuries and incidents

Employees and students self-reports injuries and incidents by logging into the IA system with their Lucat ID. Upon reporting, notifications are sent to both the manager and the safety representative.

For further information and a link to the IA system, visit the page “Reporting occupational injuries and incidents” on the staff pages.

Online course for employees

There is an online course available for employees on how to report incidents and injuries within the IA system via the Copmetence portal (Kompetensportalen).

Responsibilities for managers

If a student, guest or employee is involved in an incident or sustains an injury, it becomes the responsibility of the Head of division/department, and the EHS committee to investigate. The investigation should be made in consultation with the Safety representative (skyddsombud) and usually involves the injured party.

Serious injuries and incidents must be reported to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) and the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket). Examples of such events include fractures, severe bleeding, or exposure to hazardous substances. The Head of the division/department is obligated to report work injuries claimed by employees to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) which then determines whether an occupational injury has occurred.

Manager can find additional information about accidents and work-related injuries on Lund university’s HR website, the internal website for managers.

Compensation

As an employee or guest, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) and AFA insurance investigate whether you are entitled to compensation for sick leave, loss of income, medication costs or other resultant health complaints.

As a student you have an insurance through Kammarkollegiet during your education. Remember to save any receipts for expenses connected with the incident.

Accidents/incidents involving flammable material

If an accident or incident occurs during the handling of flammable materials it should be reported to both the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and Räddningstjänsten Syd (the South Fire and Rescue Services). After such an event, there are two forms that should be used:

Additionally, in the event of a gas alarm or a major chemical spill, an incident report should also be sent to the Environment Department (Miljöförvaltningen). E-mail: miljoforvaltningen [at] lund [dot] se (miljoforvaltningen[at]lund[dot]se)
